Bail Bond Costs, Premiums & Collateral
Ask for a written breakdown so you understand each payment and what it covers.
Three terms to understand
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Bond amount | The bail amount set for the case. |
| Premium | The charge for the bail bond. |
| Collateral | Security accepted for the bond. |
What does a Florida bail bond cost?
Florida DFS lists a 10% premium for state bonds over $1000.00 with a minimum bond fee of $100.00 on any bond of $1000.00 or less, and 15% for federal bonds. Ask an agent to confirm the applicable premium and explain any minimum or permitted charges for your bond.
Is the premium refundable?
The premium is generally earned once the defendant is released on the bond. Exceptions can apply. Collateral is separate from the premium.
Will collateral be required?
Discuss the agent’s requirements before signing. Ask what security is requested, how it will be held and the conditions for its return. Get a receipt.
Questions to ask before paying
- What is the total payment and what does each charge cover?
- What written documents and receipts will I receive?
- What am I agreeing to as a co-signer?
- How will I be told when the bond obligation ends?
